The “Goddess” of Tamil Nadu Politics : Jayalalithaa


One of the most powerful women personality Jayalalithaa passes away last night after her long battle with illness.. Thousands of supporters had gathered to pray for the recovery of their inspiration leader. She was also known as the “Iron lady” of India.. with the huge fan following. her supporters refer her as “Amma”.

Jayalalithaa was born on February 24th 1948 at Melukote, in Pandavapura taluka, Mandya district.. She studied in Bishop cottons girls, high school in banglore and completed her education in Chennai’s church park. She won many awards academically.. She was trained in classical music, western classical piano and various forms of classical dances including Bharatnatyam and Kathak.. Jayalalithaa acted as goddess Parvati as a child artist in kannad film “Sri Shaila” and got many acting offers while studying but she was more interested in becoming a lawyer and a millionaire then becoming an actor.. But financial crisis forced her to enter films and she made her acting debut in 1964 in a kana film “Chinned Gombe” and ironically she was not allowed to watch the film herself.. Later she became a superstar in South India cinema, She was also the highest paid actress of her time..

Her Close friend and Co-star MG Ramchandran introduced her to politics, She joined AIADMK in 1982 and delivered her maiden political speech.. In 1984, Jayalalithaa was elected to the Rajyasabha for the first time.. Soon after the death of MGR, In 1987 She proclaimed herself his political heir. In 1991, she become the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for the first time..

After losing the power in 1996, She faced few corruption 2001 she returned in power as Chief Minister but SC was barred from standing as a candidate in the elections because she had been found guilty of criminal offences, including allegedly obtaining property belonging to a state-operated agency called TANSI. Although she appealed to the Supreme Court, having been sentenced to five years’ imprisonment, the matter had not been resolved at the time of the elections. Despite this, the AIADMK won a majority and she was installed as Chief Minister as a non-elected member of the state assembly..
Since 2011, Jayalalithaa won two back to back assembly poll. and She was sworn as the chief minister of Tamil Nadu for the third time on 16 May 2011, having been elected unanimously as the leader of the AIADMK party subsequent to those elections.


In 2014, She was convicted in another disproportionate assets case. Judge convicted her to owning assets to the tune of Rs 66.65 crores (which includes 2,000 acres of land, 30 kg of gold and 12,000 saris) disproportionate to her known sources of income during 1991–96 when she was chief minister for the first time. She was automatically disqualified from the post of CM and the legislative assembly of Tamil Nadu and was the first Indian chief minister to be disqualified. O. Panneerselvam, a minister in her party, succeeded her as the Chief Minister.

She returned on 23 May 2015, sworn in as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for the fifth time.. won by a margin of over 1.6 lakh votes.


Jayalalithaa was again elected as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu in the May 2016 elections. She retained the R. K. Nagar constituency with a margin of 39,545 votes over her DMK rival. She is the second Chief Minister after M. G. Ramachandran, to serve consecutive terms as Chief Minister.

In her victory speech, she commented, “Even when 10 parties allied themselves against me, I did not have a coalition and I placed my faith in God and built an alliance with the people. It is clear that the people have faith in me and I have total faith in the people.”
Amma will be in memories for generations.. May her soul rest in piece..
