*Menstruation is No longer a Taboo, Girls handle it as easily as they handle a Tattoo*

“Shhhh don’t disclose this to anyone..”, Mother to her teenage daughter, “But why to maa?, asks the perplexed teenager who is pushed into the washroom, by her even more confused mother, who is trying to make a homemade sanitary pad, with shivering hands, from one of her old worn out Saree.” Keep quiet. No one should come to know this.. shhh..”
“And listen carefully” – The voice becomes sterner “No longer playing with boys in the colony, No skirts, No spicy food, Understood? The mother banged the door and went thudding, leaving the petite, puzzled teenager in tears.
With a load of questions to herself “WHAT AND WHY IT HAPPENED TO ME? WHY SUDDENLY I AM SO DIFFERENT?
This was the state of girls, not very long back. Just around 2 decades back. MENSTRUATION WAS A TABOO.
BUT NOT NOW GIRLS HANDLE THIS AS EASILY AS THEY HANDLE A TATTOO.
All this has become possible with the openness of ideas and with the exchange of thoughts. LEAVE ASIDE MOMS it’s so good to see even FATHERS TALKING SO EASILY ABOUT THIS WITH THEIR DAUGHTERS.
It’s important for girls to have a knowledge about this through their parents and teachers rather than this coming as s shock to them.
I myself have talked in detail with my daughter and prepared her for such a situation she’ll face in a couple of years, so that even if I am not around she can handle it carefully and confidently.
And why not, it’s not a curse or something to be ashamed of. Why should the dreams of girls of such tender age be crushed under the burden of such a taboo? Girls today are free to chase their dreams and they don’t allow such matters to be a hurdle in the journey of their success.
A niece of mine just began with her monthly cycle and happened to visit me. I asked her “Are you ok with it, hope you are not feeling scared or uneasy?” The answer I got is the inspiration to write this article, she replied admiring her tattoo in the mirror, “Bua (Aunty) Just Chill, we’ve given the name CHUMS to this monthly cycle. If they are called chums then these are friends. Why be scared? And girls are very smart these days I know how to handle this condition, so don’t worry.”
I was so satisfied with the answer.
All thanks to the positive guidance of parents and teachers.
A big thanks to the good quality of sanitary napkins in the market, so there is no pause to Sports, Dance, Gymnastics, Rock Climbing or even Swimming for that matter.
One positive change is that even boys, whether classmates or brothers don’t create a hoo-ha, if they witness a friend or their sister with a stained dress. In fact, they are quite understanding to the situation.
Girls have clear ideas and no longer sympathise themselves for a natural process. They are right in saying “Why should boys have all the fun?”
To enjoy life 365 days 24/7 is their right too , just 5 days in a month can’t deprive them of the fun and achievements they deserve.
Menstruation is A CELEBRATION OF FERTILITY. ITS THE ESSENCE OF BEING A WOMAN.
